About the Story:
Cagalli Yula Athha was the Princess and the Head Representative of ORB, a small but neutral country that although always got pressures from every side because of its neutral claim, quite feared by both Earth Alliance and ZAFT-- two main organizations that led The Last War-- because of its sophisticated military equipments and its influence around the world. As the leader of a very influential country, Cagalli focused all her attention to the matter at hand, trying her best to serve her country that she didn’t even have the time for her private life.
Then entered Shinn, a former ZAFT Ace Pilot that currently working as a technician in one of ORB Military facilities. Shinn had always hated The Athha Family, because he thought they were the ones who started the last war that had destroyed his family and therefore his whole life. Although Cagalli had worked so hard to make up for her father’s mistakes, to restore everything that had been destroyed, Shinn never thought it was enough, never thought it would be enough, and he never thought he would be able to forgive The Athha Family, even when Cagalli was practically the last remaining of Athha Family.
One fateful meeting in the park on a bright summer day, and everything changed.
Comment :
At the first glance, I thought this story was just the standard ‘hatred turns into love’ story, but it turned out that this story has so much more than said standard. This story wasn’t about love or hatred; it was about sacrifice, regret, and acceptance. It was about how far someone would go to fulfill their duty, to get their revenge; it was about how much someone willing to sacrifice to protect the ones they loved.
Cagalli and Shinn, both were strong individuals that had participated in the last war. It was true that war could change people, because Shinn was no longer his cheerful and calm self he was once, and Cagalli no longer a selfish and emotional tomboyish princess she was once. Shinn had lost everything, while Cagalli had gained more than she was willing to take. After the last war, Shinn always acted selfishly and based his action on his emotions, because he had nothing to lose; while Cagalli on the other hand never showed her emotions again, always hiding behind her politician’s façade, because she had so much to lose if she so much as smile in the wrong direction.
The war was over, yet they hadn’t stopped fighting their own battles. Since the beginning, Shinn knew Cagalli wasn’t the one who was responsible for what happened in the last war, but he was blinded by rage, and he needed to lash his fury, his anger, he needed someone to blame, and there she was, the only survived member of the Athha family. He regretted everything now, but it was too late.
People always say that your enemy always knows you better than your friend. I think that saying is true, if we look at the relationship between Shinn and Cagalli. When Shinn saw Cagalli, he saw a fragile little girl that hiding behind a mask of indifference, and without even meaning to, he understood. She wouldn’t react kindly to any kind of sympathy, because it meant she was weak, and she hated being weak. It was then that he started caring about her, though he never said it aloud, and he expressed it through his wits and his scathing remarks. That was why he kept on hating her, because it was the only way he knew how to express his growing affection towards her, and it was also the only way she would be able to accept his presence; Over all, this story is really great, and kind of sweet too, although in the end it was rather sad on Shinn’s part.
